In Finland, early childhood education is recognized as an important part of the educational system and as a foundation for lifelong learning.
Playing is vital for children since they view and construe the world through play. In Finnish early childhood education learning through play and active-based learning methods are seen as essential.
During this course, participants will understand the importance and pedagogical possibilities of play and movement for children’s well-being and learning.
Participants will delve into Finland’s pedagogically emphasized education model and daily activities.
The Finnish mindset is that learning can happen anywhere, and versatile environments enrich the learning process and support children’s individual needs.
Daily activities in early childhood education include also being outdoors, usually multiple times a day! Participants have a chance to reflect on the impact of learning environments throughout the week.
With practical activities, participants are introduced to Finland’s joyful and child-centered early education.
During the week we practice building playful learning settings, learn how to increase children’s participation, and how to apply more action into days both indoors and outdoors.
By the end of this course, participants will have gained a thorough understanding of how children are learning in Finnish early childhood education and will be equipped with valuable ideas and approaches for teaching in a motivating and engaging way for young children.

Tentative schedule
Day 1 – Course introduction
Introduction to the course, the school, and the external week activities;
Icebreaker activities;
Presentations of the participants’ schools;
Learning café about participants’ ECE practices.
Day 2 – Early childhood education in Finland
The Finnish ECE in a nutshell;
Child-centered approach;
Positive education and strength-based pedagogy.
Day 3 – Learning through play and movement
The role of play in learning;
Case studies: successful implementation of play-based learning;
Practical activities to enhance movement and engagement in learning.
Day 4 – Pedagogical learning environments
Different environments’ impact on learning;
Strengthening the learning process with the use of different spaces, materials, equipment, and pictures;
Outdoor education: hands-on activities.
Day 5 – Designing and implementing hands-on activities
Creating and designing hands-on activities in groups;
Testing the activities and peer feedback;
Reflecting on the week.
Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities
Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussion;
Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
Excursion and other external cultural activities.
