Description
In recent years, all European countries have been called to respond to the constant influx of foreigners from a wide range of different countries and cultures.
Over the past 10 years, more specifically, the arrival of asylum seekers and refugees has posed a challenge for all the inclusion initiatives that have had to be created and invented to welcome the foreigners.
Each European country has developed a different reception system.
This course is aimed primarily at reception center and NGO workers, who face the challenges of political change, social, employment, and housing difficulties, having to deal with a constantly changing system and, above all, with migrants arriving in a stressful situation and with severe trauma due to the migratory journey.
The course aims to equip professionals with the tools they need to develop the right approach to migrants, from both a psychological-social and technical-operational perspective, so that the reception process for asylum seekers and refugees can be a success.
Throughout the course, participants will learn different approaches to address people traumatized by the migration journey.
They will engage with experienced professionals such as reception workers, psychologists, and intercultural mediators, who will provide guidance on the most effective approaches to migrants and the most effective tools for achieving the social and professional integration of those welcomed.
By the end of the course, beneficiaries will have developed in-depth skills in recognizing migrants’ needs and developing a specific, personalized plan aimed at achieving successful integration.
They will be able to interact with asylum seekers and refugees, considering their experience and communicating effectively across cultural differences, so that they will be able to focus on their strengths and develop them to the fullest.
Above all, participants will return to their workplaces with renewed confidence to face the complexity of their role and be prepared to face the daily challenges of making reception a process of dignity, growth, and inclusion.

What is included
Learning outcomes
The course will help participants to:
- Explain the main features of migration policies in Europe and, more specifically, the Italian system;
- Communicate more effectively with asylum seekers and refugees using clear, respectful, and culturally sensitive approaches;
- Recognize and critically reflect on cultural differences and apply strategies that promote trust, dignity, and collaboration;
- Use basic psychological and social tools to support migrants who have experienced stress and trauma, also to help them in their integration process;
- Create a network of professionals (and colleagues) able to exchange best practices from each country of origin and build a more equitable reception system.
Tentative schedule
Day 1 – Course introduction
- Introduction to the course and the Academy;
- Introduction to the host city and the week’s cultural activities;
- Icebreaker activities;
- Presentations of the participants’ schools and institutions.
Introduction and Migration Context
- Group activity: “expectation wall” and shared goals for the week;
- Overview of the migratory phenomenon in Europe;
- The basics of the reception system in Italy and the International Protection.
Day 2 – Cultural diversity and relational tools
- How to approach communication from a psychological point of view: obstacles and opportunities;
- Role-playing in common situations (misunderstandings, stereotypes, language barriers);
- Practical guidelines and concrete methodologies to establish effective and respectful contact with migrants.
Day 3 – Experiences and narratives
- Narratives and “Migration Storytelling”;
- Screening and discussion of the documentary produced by Tahomà, in partnership with UNESCO and CICT (International Council of Cinema, Television and Audiovisual Communication), based on the daily lives of asylum seekers hosted at the Association’s reception centers;
- Group discussion: connecting stories with professional practice.
Day 4 – Meet the reception community
- Visit to the SAI MSNA facility for unaccompanied minors managed by Tahomà;
- Meeting with a young migrant welcomed at the Tahomà reception centers and with the educational team;
- Facilitated group discussion and feedback.
Day 5 – From awareness to action
- Comparison of participants between the different reception models;
- Workshop: strategies to bring positive change into participants’ own professional contexts;
- Simulation of real cases and collaborative problem-solving;
- Final Sharing: recommendations, perspectives, and creation of new professional networks.
Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities
- Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussion;
- Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
- Excursion and other external cultural activities.
