Description
Vocational education faces the constant need to respond to rapidly changing professional, technological, and social contexts.
Developed within the Basque VET system, the ETHAZI (Etekin Handiko Zikloak – High-Performance Programmes) model promotes a profound change in the way teaching and learning take place, placing students at the centre of the educational process and fostering their autonomy, collaboration, and responsibility while working on real and meaningful professional challenges.
This practical philosophy is reflected throughout the course, where participants will engage in hands-on workshops on 3D printing, Extended Reality (XR), and podcast production, as well as visits to vocational training centres, experiencing first-hand how innovative tools and challenge-based learning can be integrated into everyday teaching practice.
In addition to these practical activities, participants will explore how ETHAZI can be adapted to their own educational contexts rather than simply replicated.
They will exchange ideas and good practices with educators from different European countries while discovering how the model integrates entrepreneurship, digital skills, creativity, values education, and the STEAM approach.
By the end of the course, they will leave with practical strategies, classroom-ready ideas, and greater confidence to introduce or strengthen challenge-based collaborative learning in their own VET institutions.
What is included
Learning outcomes
The course will help participants to:
- Discover the pedagogical and organizational principles of the ETHAZI model as implemented in the Basque VET system;
- Experience challenge-based collaborative learning from a learner’s perspective, working on a complete real-life ETHAZI challenge – from its conception to the assessment of skills in a “three-way” approach between both teacher and student (self and peer);
- Design and structure collaborative challenges that integrate technical competences and transversal skills relevant to VET contexts;
- Reflect on how the Basque ETHAZI approach can be adapted to different Vocational Education Systems and school realities;
- Exchange good practices in methodological and digital innovation in VET among the participants and visiting public and private educational institutions;
- Explore opportunities for collaboration and networking within European education and Erasmus+ frameworks.
Tentative schedule
Day 1 – Introduction to the course
- Introduction to the course and the Academy;
- Introduction to the host city and the week’s cultural activities;
- Icebreaker activities;
- Presentations of the participants’ schools and institutions.
Introduction to the ETHAZI model
- Overview of the Basque Vocational Education and Training system;
- Introduction to the ETHAZI model and its key principles;
- Forming teams;
- Challenge 1: Build your plane. The 11 steps;
- Experiencing a collaborative challenge from a learner’s perspective;
- The role of the teacher as facilitator in intermodular collaborative challenges .
Day 2 – VET in Practice: ETHAZI Challenges, STEAM and 3D Printing
- Warm-up activity: Discussion on Monday’s activities;
- The Real Challenges of Three Vocational Training Programmes: Administrative Services, Sales and Retail Activities and Web Application Development;
- School Visit: visit to a VET centre in Bilbao;
- STEAM in the ETHAZI Challenges;
- 3D Printing in the ETHAZI Challenges.
Day 3 – Assessment and digital innovation
- The assessment process: Exploring assessment approaches for technical and transversal skills;
- How to assess skills in challenging environments and progressive evaluation;
- Technical competences+Transversal competences;
- Designing your own challenges. Weight of transversal competences?:
- Integrating collaborative digital tools to support challenge-based learning;
- Strategies for applying ETHAZI in virtual or hybrid environments: XR Workshop and Robotics Workshop.
Day 4 – Sharing challenges and reflecting on learning
- Presenting the challenges;
- Podcast workshop;
- Visit to Arce, VET centre in Bilbao.
Day 5 – From good practices to transfer: reflecting on the ETHAZI experience
- Visit to CF SOMORROSTRO, VET centre nearby Bilbao. During visits to the training centers, the impact of implementing the ETHAZI model will be discussed, both from a methodological and academic perspective and from an organizational standpoint.
- Sharing good practices and reflections on transferability to different VET contexts;
- Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussions;
- Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance.
Day 6 – Structured cultural activities
- Structured cultural activity(ies) according to the hosting location;
- Learning journal: individual written reflection on the course experience;
- Course reflection: self-reflection and review of course materials and resources.
