Berlin, often referred to as the vibrant capital of Germany, stands as a testament to a rich history marked by iconic landmarks, diverse cultural influences, and a dynamic contemporary atmosphere.

This course invites participants to explore Berlin’s cultural wealth, serving as a case study to elucidate the principles of Cultural Heritage Education (CHE).

Aligned with the Council of Europe’s vision, this course seeks to seamlessly integrate cultural heritage education into school curricula, fostering an understanding of shared history and values among younger generations and strengthening their connection to a collective European cultural and political identity.

Through an immersive, hands-on approach, participants will enhance their visual and critical thinking skills, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the protection and promotion of cultural heritage to forge a European identity rooted in common and tangible roots.

The course will include guided tours in the city center and other historic locations, spotlighting iconic monuments such as the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Cathedral, and the historic Museum Island.

The immersive experience is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the city’s rich history, allowing participants to delve into the stories behind these iconic monuments and gain a deeper appreciation for the cultural tapestry woven into Berlin’s past.

Learning outcomes

The course will help the participants to:  

  • Provide a historical framework concerning the cultural heritage and the artistic universe of Berlin;
  • Foster critical and visual thinking skills to inspire a deeper level of active learning;
  • Lead students in history and art activities inspired by classical works of art and architecture;
  • Appraise the value and importance of cultural heritage for an inclusive and sustainable social community;
  • Create a European identity through Cultural Heritage Education (CHE) and museum digital resources.

Tentative schedule

Day 1 – Introduction to cultural heritage education

  • Course overview, introduction to the school, and external week activities;
  • Icebreaker activities;
  • Presentations of participants’ schools;
  • Introduction to the cultural heritage concept, defining European and international valorization policies.

Day 2 – The cultural heritage of Baroque Berlin

  • Explore the magnificence of Baroque art and architecture;
  • Visit Charlottenburg Palace or others;
  • Activity: reflection on Berlin’s cultural heritage and its connection to European cultural identity.

Day 3 – Exploring ancient and modern artworks

  • Learn from the past with a guided tour of historical sites like the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, and Museum Island;
  • Discover the heritage of Berlin’s ever-evolving artistic landscape.

Day 4 – Cultural heritage digitalization

  • Integrate Art and culture digital tools and archives in the classroom;
  • Explore the European database for creating a common identity through Cultural Heritage Education;
  • Discuss organizing visits to historical sites with students.

Day 5 – Modern cultural heritage of Berlin

  • Study arts in Berlin with a focus on contemporary arts;
  • Final brainstorming on tangible, intangible, and digital heritage;
  • Conclude with a final cultural activity.

Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities

  • Course evaluation, competencies roundup, feedback, and discussion;
  • Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
  • External cultural activities and excursions to further explore Berlin’s heritage.
