At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Vienna was a hub of artistic activity, attracting some of the most influential artists, architects, and designers of the time. The city’s unique blend of cultural traditions, intellectual curiosity, and avant-garde experimentation made it a fertile ground for artistic innovation.
The art movement known as Modernism rejected traditional forms and focused on innovation and experimentation and encompassed a wide range of art forms, including literature, visual art, architecture, and music. Its disruption led to the birth of a new artistic experience in Vienna influenced by the French Art Nouveau.

Nowadays, it is possible to notice traces of the Viennese Art Nouveau style in the architecture of Otto Wagner and in Gustav Klimt’s and Egon Schiele’s paintings displayed in museums such as the Albertina, the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, the Leopold, and many others.
Participants will take a deep dive into the rich artistic history of Vienna, and explore the two artistic movements that shaped its cultural landscape, i.e., Modernism and Art Nouveau.
The course will provide visits to cultural sites such as Belvedere and Leopold Museum. Furthermore, a city tour will be organized to discover the most important Art Nouveau palaces.
Through an immersive learning approach based on teamwork, peer education, and cultural visits, participants will also foster their creativity, and critical and visual thinking skills while expanding their knowledge of the topic.
In addition, the course will encourage digital-based educational strategies for embedding art and culture in school curricula. The emphasis on the digitization of certain museums and cultural institutions aims at obtaining transparent and selected information to develop easier practical projects.
Whether you are a seasoned art enthusiast or just beginning to explore the world of art and design, this course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of two of the most fascinating artistic movements in history and their impact on the vibrant city of Vienna.

Day 1 – Introduction to the course
- Introduction to the course, the school, and the external week activities;
- Icebreaker activities;
- Presentations of participants’ schools;
- Definition of Modernism and Art Nouveau;
- Novelties in art, architecture, literature, and music of the late 19th century.
Day 2 – Modernism and Art Nouveau in Europe
- The historical context of industrialization at the end of the 19th century;
- The new challenges of Art Nouveau and Modernism in Europe;
- City tour of Art Nouveau architecture.
Day 3 – The protagonists of the artistic Secessionism in Vienna
- The Secessionist movement in Vienna;
- Secessionist leaders: from Gustav Klimt to Otto Wagner;
- Visit to Leopold Museum.
Day 4 – Innovation in Art, graphic, and design
- The relationship between heritage and innovation through the lens of Art nouveau;
- The Wiener Werkstätte: a creative and pioneering design workshop;
- Design educational activities inspired by Art Nouveau.
Day 5 – Museums and digitalization
- Useful digital tools for Arts & Culture Learning in the classroom;
- Discovering museums’ digital archives and trends on their social networks;
- Visit to Belvedere Museum.
Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities
- Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussion;
- Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
- Excursion and other external cultural activities.
