Muslim population is increasing every year in Europe; teachers and educators have students from different cultural and religious backgrounds in their classes.
This course has been created to equip teachers and educators with a foundational understanding of Islamic culture and beliefs to facilitate positive interactions and support in diverse settings and to learn Islamic culture and beliefs in a Muslim-majority country.
In this course, participants will get familiar with the fundamental principles of Islam, cultural and religious practices, and Islamic reflections in daily life.
The main idea of the course is to help educators create respectful classroom environments by raising awareness and providing accurate knowledge.
Activities will include interactive discussions, case studies, and a field trip, designed to brainstorm, dive deep, and observe the Islamic culture. The participants will be equipped with different teaching practices to apply in their classrooms after this course.
By the end of the course, participants will have the knowledge and tools to better understand Islamic viewpoints, support Muslim students more effectively, and apply teaching methods that are sensitive to cultural differences.

Day 1 – Introduction to the course
Getting to know each other and discussing the context of the course;
Presentations of the participants’ schools;
Group discussion: personal experiences and perceptions related to Islam;
Mini lecture: exploring global perspectives on Islam and cultural diversity.
Day 2 – Islamic traditions and cultural expressions
Discovering the fundamental beliefs of Islam;
Daily practices and community life, variations and different adaptations of these practices;
Islamic holidays, traditions, and cultural expressions.
Day 3 – Integrating cultural awareness into teaching
Importance of encouraging respectful and inclusive dialogue in the classroom;
Practices for applying cultural awareness and sensitivity into the classroom environment;
Practical techniques to support Muslim students in classrooms.
Day 4 – Addressing bias and misinformation
Biases and misinformation related to Islam;
Discovering ways to open a dialogue over sensitive topics;
Visit a local mosque to observe Islamic practices firsthand.
Day 5 – Common rules and similarities
Exploring the similarities among religions;
Common “golden rules”, practices, and moral teachings.
Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities
Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussion;
Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
Excursion and other external cultural activities.
