Thessaloniki is the second-largest city of Greece and the most important of the Macedonian area. Built by the sea, it is a modern metropolis bearing the marks of its stormy history and its cosmopolitan character, which give it a special beauty and charm.
With evidence of Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires, history remains all around the city, especially in Ano Poli (upper town). Although with an incredible list of monuments from these periods, such as the ruins of Roman Emperor Galerius’ 4th-century palace and Rotunda (that has been both a church and a mosque), much of the city center was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1917. The rebuilt 20th-century city has a modern European layout.
Nowadays, Thessaloniki is one of the largest student centers in South-Eastern Europe, while 15 of its monuments are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List (out of 800 in the whole world).
