Cluj-Napoca and Surroundings

Cluj-Napoca is considered the fastest developing city in Romania and with its great multicultural environment, it’s also one of the most lively European cities.

The city is home to several highly rated universities, has a vibrant nightlife and landmarks dating back to Saxon and Hungarian rules. In 2015 it was the “European Youth Capital”, but in the same year the city also won the ‘European Festivals Awards’ with its famous Untold festival. More and more tourists are attracted to the city, not only because of its cultural, music and film festivals (such as Untold, Electric Castle or TIFF) and touristic and natural attractions, but also because of the Transylvanian people who are well-known for their warmth and good nature. The gothic churches, dramatic statues, baroque palaces, relaxing parks are all highly appreciated by tourists, but the mountains, gorges and salt mines neighbouring the city offer even more treasures to visitors.

6 Best Things to see in Cluj-Napoca

1) Unirii Square

The city’s biggest square offers many beauties in one place: the gothic-style St. Michael’s Church, the dramatic Matthias Corvinus Statue, the baroque-era Bánffy Palace & Art Museum, the Mathias Corvinus House and the Ethnographic Museum, all being only a few square meters apart! After you visit this square you will most probably reach the same conclusion as many of our visitors do: ‘this city is more beautiful than what I expected!’

2) “Alexandru Borza” Botanical Garden

With a history of almost 150 years, the botanical garden is home toaround 11,000 exhibits and is divided into several sectors and buildings: mediteranean garden, rosarium, japanese garden, herbarium, roman garden, greenhouses, tropical plants, botanical museum and many more. This place is just perfect for a relaxing afternoon walk!

3) “Romulus Vuia” Ethnographic Park

If you want to go back in time and see how and where the older generations lived, the ethnographic park is the perfect place to go! The park has two sections: one with technical installations and workshops from the 18th-20th century, such as wood processing, wool fabrics, gold mining , iron processing, cereal crushing, etc; and the second one contains traditional peasant farmsteads dated between the 17th-20th century, representative of the very diverse and colorful ethnographic areas of Transylvania.

4) Tailors Bastion

Once part of the protective system, the bastion and tower was built in the 13th-14th century and was, most probably, the strongest fortress of the city. After being witness to several historical events, today the Bastion has become an urban cultural center, which has a cafe, an exhibition illustrating the history of tailors’  guild from Cluj and hosts many cultural events such as lectures, concerts, exhibitions or fairs.

5) Hoia-Baciu Forest

Transylvania is well known for its mysterious nature and Hoia-Baciu Forest reflects this feeling very well. Also called “the haunted forest”, this place is well known for the paranormal activities which have taken place there on several occasions. This Bermuda Triangle of Cluj has been famous since the ‘60s when a UFO was caught on camera and since then, the reports included ghost stories and apparitions. Moreover, the vegetation is often bizarre. Believe in such things or not, you have to experience the feeling that surrounds you when entering this forest…

6) Central Park and the Casino

The Central Park was built in the 19th century and at that time, it was one of the biggest parks designed for leisure in Eastern Europe. The park is still considered to be the most important leisure spot according to the citizens of Cluj. Besides lakes, playgrounds, exercise areas and the possibility to boat, the park is also home to the former Casino. The Casino is a historical monument, which over time has been used as a museum, art school and restaurant, and today is used as a Urban Cultural Center.

This place is just perfect for a walk after a long study day!

The full-day excursion in Cluj-Napoca

After an intensive study week, everyone deserves to take a day off and have a trip, so we will dedicate Saturdays to excursions! The groups will be able to choose from 2 different trip options based on their preferences, but also on the current weather conditions:

Full-day excursion in Rimetea

Rimetea is one of the best-conserved villages in Romania, which managed to successfully preserve its patrimony, which is why it also won the “Europa Nostra” award in 1999. The breathtaking Trascau mountains surrounding it (which are also called the mountains of double Sunrise, since the Sun literally rises twice here), the traditional white houses with green windows, the local ethnographic museum, the fresh traditional food will all convince you to think of this place again… and again!

During the excursion, our participants will visit the local museum, have the option to choose between the challenging hike to the top or easy walk at the bottom of the mountain, taste local foods, and relax in the beautiful and quite rustic environment!

The full-day excursion in Turda Salt Mine & Turda Gorge

Cluj-Napoca is not only known for its beauty, but also for the natural surrounding areas. At just 40 km distance from Cluj-Napoca, the Turda Gorge and Salt Mine offer a wonderful time for visitors!

Participants will be able to see Romania’s most spectacular underground formation! The Salt mine was shaped by people digging for the remaining salt following the evaporation of the sea which once covered the entire region. After remaining speechless in the Salt Mine, our participants will be able to relax in the refreshing mountains close to the mine. Surprising views, easy or more challenging hiking, small wooden bridges, the relaxing river and the legend about the Gorge will charm you instantly!
