1 Week Erasmus+ Teacher Training Course. Concept by Carolina Castro, MA in Education.

Description

The high relevance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in schools has been recognized globally and some major international institutions like the OECD and UNESCO are investing in the promotion of SEL in students, teachers, and communities.

This course has been created for educators who want to learn more about SEL and who are interested in exploring the relevance of social and emotional learning in education and life, SEL related teaching strategies, how to plan a concrete SEL program for their classes, and learn to use it to improve the overall class community.

SEL is defined by the The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) as “the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions”.

In this highy interactive and experience-based course, participants will gain an understanding of what SEL is by reflecting on the current issues in their own educational context, steming specific cases to make it more meaningful to them, as well as by producing a SEL implementation plan for their classes. We will use as the main reference the most widely used framework created by the CASEL for real implementation scenarios, focusing on 5 main areas: Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making.

Teachers will have allocated time to create a SEL implementation plan for their classess during the week and will share it for feedback with peers as the culmination learning event of the course. This plan will be potentially a good tool to disseminate the knowledge acquired on SEL to peer teachers at their home institutions. Participants will also have the chance to evaluate their own emotional intelligence, practice mindfulness, and acquire recipes and tools for successful SEL practice.

Teacher participants will have access to a digital platform where they will be able to exchange ideas and materials before, during and after the course and the facilitator will be available for 3 months after the course to follow up on the participants’ progress.
