This course will provide you with insights into the Nordic education systems, with a deep understanding of interdisciplinary learning, equal opportunities, student autonomy, and sustainable development.
You will discover the secrets behind Nordic educational success by getting to know strategies that have made Nordic countries stand out globally, such as active learning, interdisciplinary approaches, and a commitment to equal opportunities.
During this course, you will explore innovative classroom practices from Nordic countries, from collaborative activities to case studies and workshops.
You will gain practical insights for effective implementation of strategies from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland into your classroom, and eventually experience what the Nordic way of life means.
By the end of the course, you will gain a set of competencies inspired by the successful Nordic education models. You will implement these practices into your teaching context to create a concrete plan for the classroom with a “Nordic twist”.
Moreover, you will be able to explain these pedagogies to your colleagues to act for change in your school in the future.

Day 1 – Course introduction
- Introduction to the course, the school, and the external week activities;
- Icebreaker activities;
- Presentations of the participants’ schools;
- Goal setting for the week;
- Overview of Nordic Education Systems: Values, Principles and Components.
Day 2 – Understanding the Nordic Education Landscape: interdisciplinary learning and equal opportunities
- The Concept of a Public School System in the Nordic Countries;
- Explore how Nordic countries implement interdisciplinary approaches;
- Strategies from the Nordic countries for promoting equal opportunities in education.
Day 3 – Students autonomy, teamwork and active learning
- Promoting and fostering student autonomy: Best practices and strategies for student’s responsibility in learning;
- Collaborative Teaching Methods;
- Case Studies of Active Learning in Nordic Classrooms.
Day 4 – Sustainable development and outdoor education
- Understanding the approach of Nordic countries towards sustainable development in education;
- Practical examples of Sustainable Development from Nordic Schools;
- Outdoor Education Workshop: Nature-Based Learning.
Day 5 – Implementing Nordic insights in your classroom
- Adapting Nordic strategies to your own teaching context;
- Creating our own action plans for our classrooms based on the Nordic learning practices.
Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities
- Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussion;
- Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
- Excursion and other external cultural activities.
