2 Week: Intensive English Course and CLIL for Teachers

Description

This course aims at developing teachers’ fluency and accuracy in the English language. It also takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding CLIL methodology and introduces participants to how the theory can relate to their own classroom practice. Includes CLIL lesson planning, resources, and the creation of materials.

The course addresses teachers of all subjects who would like to refresh and broaden their skills in the English language, implement CLIL methodology in their classes, understand its principles and applications, and find resources and lesson materials. 

By the end of the course, participants will feel more confident in speaking and writing in English. They will have also learned the key principle of CLIL lesson planning, material development and the integration of content and language teaching.

Suggested English Proficiency Level: ADVANCED

Learning outcomes

The course will help the participants to:  

  • Understand the key principles of CLIL methodology and how the theory can relate to their own classroom practice.
  • Plan CLIL lessons including designing activities and materials to support learners in their acquisition of content and language.

Tentative schedule

Day 1 – Course introduction and setting goals

  • Introduction to the course, the school, and the external week activities;
  • Icebreaker activities;
  • Presentations of the participants’ schools;
  • Introduction to key principles of CLIL

Day 2 – Activating prior knowledge

  • Techniques to introduce new concepts in CLIL – Activating prior knowledge;
  • Activities and tasks with a language focus;
  • Developing tasks for the presentation of new concepts.

Day 3 – Authentic materials

  • Class visit to a museum – identifying ideas for a CLIL lesson;
  • Developing and designing tasks based on the theme.

Day 4 – Scaffolding Input and Output

  • Considering ways to scaffold language in a CLIL lesson;
  • Developing tasks and materials to help scaffold input and output.

Day 5 – Collaboration in the classroom

  • Ways to motivate learners to participate and use the CLIL language;
  • Developing collaborative tasks in various subject areas.

Day 6 – Cultural activities

  • Excursion and other external cultural activities.

Day 7 – Rest day

  • Day off.

Day 8 – Reading and speaking skills improvement

  • Developing productive skills – writing and speaking;
  • Activities and tasks with a language focus;
  • Developing writing and speaking activities for the CLIL classroom.

Day 9 – Writing and speaking skills improvement

  • Developing productive skills – writing and speaking;
  • Activities and tasks with a language focus;
  • Developing writing and speaking activities for the CLIL classroom.

Day 10 – Speaking and pronunciation

  • Differentiation in the CLIL classroom;
  • Designing differentiated tasks;
  • Focus on pronunciation.

Day 11 – CLIL in practice

  • Focus on Assessment in CLIL;
  • Putting CLIL into practice – review of the key elements of a CLIL lesson;
  • Designing a CLIL lesson or part of a lesson.

Day 12 – Project presentations and course closure

  • Working on the CLIL lesson – tasks and activities to take away from the course;
  • Presentation of projects to the group;
  • Course evaluation: round up of acquired competences, feedback, and discussion;
  • Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance.
